A model school was established at Washington State Normal School during the first year of operation in 1891. In 1917, the school was named the Edison School after an agreement was made between the trustees of the Normal School and the Ellensburg School District for use of the training school building. In 1889 the United States Congress authorized the residents of Washington Territory to form a state government. One provision of that authorization was Section 17 of the Enabling Act, which granted additional lands owned by the United States government to the state for the establishment and maintenance of state normal schools.
